The Northern Baronies

North of the River of Tears is a land of wide open fields dotted by small forests and the occasional keep. The land is not excessively fertile: animal herding, and that spread over wide areas, is all that the land can support. Recent increases in Imperial taxation have caused the herders to attempt to increase the size of their flocks to make up their losses, but this practice is damaging the top soil. A famine may be in the cards unless things change shortly. The most skilled (non-orc) horsemen are said to come from the Northern Baronies.

River of Tears: The River of Tears (called such for its clarity and a legend that it was formed by a crying goddess) separates the Northern Baronies and Sylvania from the rest of the Empire, running southeast until it hits the Capital District, then straight east to the sea.

Ironskull Hold: Ironskull Hold was founded by Bryan Ironskull, a brave local warrior who was famed for his fighting prowess and extreme stupidity (he didn’t even realize that “ironskull” was an insult and took it for a family name). Ironskull founded the Hold using his earnings from his extremely profitable career as a soldier of fortune and general beat stick. Fortunately for his legacy, his descendants were all much smarter than he was (though it could be said they would have to be) and the Ironskulls are considered one of the most influential families in the north, and indeed the entire Empire. Their city shows this, being considered the informal capital of the north.
